Heartlands Academy currently has two students who are aspiring chefs. Following on from their Year 10 work experience, these students continue to develop themselves through further study at University College Birmingham’s Young Waiters, Chef and Bakers Academy. This involves an array of practical development coupled with kitchen and front-of-house skills. Following completion of these courses, parents and teachers are invited to a graduation event, which includes dishes that have been prepared by students and
an awards event. University College Birmingham teamed up with Maple for Canada this year to launch the UCB Young Chef Competition. Hundreds of students across the West Midlands applied and Hafsah Anjum in Year 10 at Heartlands Academy made it into the semi-finals. She was one of 16 competing students, she made a beef wellington followed by a maple syrup infused apple crumble. Hafsah said: “despite a few burnt fingers and being very stressful, it was a great experience. It was amazing to have been chosen”.
